Vision

We believe that by increasing the visibility of Black businesses and highlighting the importance of spending Black, we can facilitate change around socio-economic inequalities affecting Black communities. Black Pound Day encourages consumers to spend with Black businesses on the first Saturday of every month to achieve this vision.

Founded by UK music artist, Swiss from the So Solid crew, Black Pound Day (BPD) seeks to address the economic inequalities and imbalances affecting Black businesses and entrepreneurs in the UK and global diasporic communities. BPD takes place on the first Saturday of every month and is a solution-based approach set up to support the growth of the Black economy. We invite all communities to promote and spend with Black businesses locally and online. BPD aims to unite all cultures and ethnicities to support Black business and strengthen the Black economy.

Founder

Black Pound Day is the brainchild of myself Swiss, and is a grass roots solution-based initiative created to support the growth of the UK Black economy. The day encourages all communities to replace their usual purchases with products from Black led businesses locally or online on the first Saturday of every month, with the hope that spending Black will become a normalised practise throughout the year.

It was a lingering idea I had created around 2007 but never had the resources to put to use, however I was recently inspired to do so as a result of the unjust murder of George Floyd and subsequent anti-racism protests in 2020.

As a more long-term sustainable response, I realised that when the fists’ come out the air the most practical step would be to put those fists’ in our pockets to help assist adjusting economic inequalities that have affected the Black community historically. According to Google, in the same year the initiative started Black businesses were searched for more than ever in London since the inception of the internet, which is indicative of the movement’s huge impact. Black Pound Day is officially the biggest economic movement for Black people in the UK since time immemorial and has successfully turned unconscious consumers to intentional spenders and political protesters to economic activists. Launched on the 27th June 2020 Consumers are encouraged to seek out and spend with Black led businesses via the www.blackpoundDay.uk directory and marketplace, if you can’t spend however, then you can promote, leave a review, advocate, or tell a friend and also don’t forget to hashtag #BlackPoundDay when engaging online.
